PERFECTION BY MEANS OF PRECISION

The production of cast rolls by the horizontal spin-casting process allows effective usage of various alloys. Thanks to our leading position in technology and innovation we have discerning clients throughout the world.

Wear resistant alloyed material as shell sleeve

In the horizontal spin-casting process the shell is produced in the form of a sleeve. A great variety of alloys are used for different applications.

Filling the sleeve pod with core material:

After the horizontal casting of the sleeve pod, the core material is poured in the static cast. The optimum bond between the sleeve and the core is guaranteed through precise process control.

Assembly of accessories

According to the requests of our clients, rolls are assembled with all necessary accessory parts.

The core is cast in the solidified roll shell. This later forms the bearing area and the driving connection. The gross weight of a roll can amount to as much as 60 tonnes; a finished processed roll weighs up to 42 tonnes.

The duration and course of the heat treatment are decisive in ensuring that the finished roll has exactly the material qualities as required in the client’s rolling mill. Depending on the type of the roll, heat treatment can last up to six weeks.

Rolls produced by ESW are up to 9 metres long and their diameter can amount to 1,500 mm. The rolls are given their final measurements and their specific surface through turning, milling and grinding in mechanical processing. Measurement accuracy of the finished rolls is tested to 1/1000 mm.

Range of usage of our rolls

Our rolls are used in very diverse rolling mills throughout the world. Here is a selection of the most frequent plant configurations.

Conventional Hot Strip Mill (HSM):
The classic HSM with slab pre-heating furnace, several roughing stands and a finishing stand, followed by cooling equipment and the coiler.
Hot Strip Mill with reversing roughing (HSM):
The modified form of the Hot Strip Mill has a pre-heating furnace, a reversing roughing stand and a finishing stand, followed by cooling equipment and the coiler.
Compact Strip Production (CSP):
The classic Compact Strip Production does not heat slabs but pours liquid material directly into a slab, which is then transported further into the induction oven. This is followed by the finishing stand, cooling equipment and the coiler
Endless Strip Production (ESP):
The Endless Strip Production as a modified form of the CSP has several preheating stands before the induction oven. This is followed by a finishing stand, the cooling equipment and the coiler.
Heavy plate rolling mill:
The classic heavy plate rolling mill with pre-heating furnace, finishing stand, followed by a cooling device. The finished product is sold as heavy plate (not coiled).
Combined Steckel / heavy plate rolling mill:
The special form of the heavy plate plant also has so-called coil boxes which serve to homogenize the temperature. Heavy plate is produced in this combined form but thinner strips are also coiled.
Combined Steckel / heavy plate rolling mill with roughing stand:
this modified form of the combined Steckel / heavy plate rolling mill additionally has a roughing stand.
